Outdoor adventure films featured in upcoming events to benefit scholarships

January 05, 2010

The MHC Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership (ETOL) program, in partnership with the Medicine Hat Public Library, will be presenting a series of events next week that will raise funds for program scholarships.

The ETOL program and the Medicine Hat Public Library are very proud to bring the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour to Medicine Hat on January 11 and 12, 2010.  Hot on the heels of the largest mountain festival in the world, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour has hit the road, with stops planned in more than 250 communities and 30 countries across the globe.

This year's tour features a collection of the most inspiring and thought-provoking active, environmental, and adventure mountain films. Traveling from remote landscapes and cultures to up close and personal with adrenaline-packed action sports, the 2009/2010 world tour is an exhilarating and provocative exploration of the mountain world.

Medicine Hat Public Library has hosted this annual event for the past twelve years, garnering sellout crowds each year. With the help of volunteers from the Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership (ETOL) Applied Degree Program at Medicine Hat College, the tour representative, known as a Banff Road Warrior, sets up the theatre and delivers the best of the best in mountain films to an eager audience. For the past seven years, ETOL students have been responsible for distributing posters throughout Medicine Hat, soliciting door prizes from local businesses, helping with the setting up and tearing down on the day of the event and collecting and selling tickets at the door.

Films featured this year will include:
  • Take a Seat which follows cyclist Dominic Gill on a mission to cycle 32,000 kilometers from the northern regions of Alaska to the southern tip of South America.
  • Rowing the Atlantic in which Roz Savage sheds her comfy life in England to row solo across the Atlantic.
  • Mustang: Journey of Transformation, which transports the viewer to the Himalayan kingdom of Mustang, one of the last sanctuaries of authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture.

Additional films featuring unicycling, climbing, kayaking, snowboarding, mountain biking and cross country skiing will also be screened.

On January 13, a special presentation by Pat & Baiba Morrow will be held at the college featuring the film producers' story of pioneer mountain guide Conrad Kain.  Join the Morrows as they speak about Conrad Kain, and also present their film The Magic Mountain, about Cynthia Hunt’s work in the Himalayas.

Proceeds from the cost of admission to these events will benefit scholarships for Medicine Hat College’s Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership Program.
