 Update: March 17 / 2:15 p.m.

As we continue to navigate this unprecedented time, we want to again thank you for your patience and understanding. Please be assured that our primary response team, faculty, and staff are working diligently to make the transition to alternate delivery formats for learning and services, as well as making decisions following Alberta Health Services directives.

Students can expect an email tomorrow with details regarding continuing their studies in an adapted format.

Library Services

  • During this time, library services at both the Medicine Hat and Brooks campuses remain operational.
  • Due dates for all library items, including laptops, have been extended until April 30th, 2020. Please refrain from returning library materials in the coming week

Update: March 16 / 2:15 p.m.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work together to find solutions in this rapidly evolving situation. Our response team is meeting twice daily to gather new information, connect activity and share updates with our college community as they become available.

As directed by Alberta Government and Alberta Health Services yesterday, Medicine Hat College, along with other provincial post-secondary institutions, have suspended all face-to-face classes. We are in the process of transitioning as much learning as possible to alternate delivery formats. Our primary focus is helping students complete the semester. There are many details to consider, as this process will vary from program to program and course to course. Here is what we have confirmed at this time:

Classes

  • Classes are expected to resume early next week in alternative formats. Instructors will be connecting directly with their students to provide more details. Please watch your student email and Blackboard for more information.
  • All practicums have been suspended at this time.

Campus Access and Services

  • Residence remains open
  • campuses in Brooks and Medicine Hat remain open. Students can access services like the library, counselling, registration, and the bookstore, but alternate ways of delivering some of these services are also being considered.
  • Connections Medical Clinic physicians are available for phone consultations for existing patients (must already have a chart with Dr. Wanner or Dr. Swiegers). Patients can call 403.502.8437, Monday - Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. to speak with a doctor. This is NOT a replacement for 911, 811 or the AHS online COVID-19 self-assessment tool. Please visit https://www.mhc.ab.ca/Services/HealthandWellness/HealthServices for details.
  • Fitness centres at Medicine Hat and Brooks campus are closed.
  • Access to food services is limited.

Events
All on campus events prior to April 30 have been cancelled, as well as large gatherings after that date. This includes the Rattler Run (April 25) and Convocation (June 12). We will be looking at other ways to celebrate and acknowledge the success of our students and will provide more information in the coming weeks.

Please take time for self-care, and develop a support plan with friends and family members to prepare for this evolving situation. Alberta Health Services is a valuable resource. Please visit their website for important information about keeping you and your loved ones healthy.

This website will be updated as new information becomes available.

Update: March 15 / 5:50 p.m.

To our valued college community,

Based on today’s announcement from the provincial government and Alberta Health Services, classes at all post-secondary institutions, including Medicine Hat College, have been suspended until further notice. Other college operations, such as residence, will continue at this time.

More information about our approach for alternate program delivery options will be made available tomorrow. We know you have questions. We are working on answers and ask for your patience as we navigate an unprecedented situation in our province.

These are difficult times. Not only is it important to consider our physical health and ways we can protect ourselves and others, managing our mental health is also critical. Please take time for self-care, and develop a support plan with friends and family members to prepare for this evolving situation. Alberta Health Services is a valuable resource. Please visit their website for important information about keeping you and your loved ones healthy.

We’re in this challenge together. I’ll do my best to ensure you have access to the information and support you need to manage through the days ahead. As more details become available, updates will be shared via email, social media, and on this webpage.

Thank you,

Kevin Shufflebotham
President & CEO,

Update: March 14 / 2 p.m.

Medicine Hat College continues to operate within the guidelines provided by health and government authorities. We learned late Friday afternoon that publicly funded schools, including post-secondary institutions, are to remain open at this time. We will continue to share information through this web page and via student and employee email as details are confirmed.

We understand that people are concerned about this evolving situation and ask that you remain calm and look to Alberta Health Services for accurate sources of information.

Update: March 13 / 4:45 p.m.

Based on information shared by the Alberta Government this afternoon, all publicly funded schools will remain open at this time, provided steps are taken to eliminate large congregations of students. No more than 250 people should be in the same room at any time. Additionally, it is recommended that sports and other extracurricular activities that involve physical contact be cancelled as an additional precaution.

Post-secondary institutions have not been advised to close at this time. Medicine Hat College classes and operations will continue as scheduled on Monday, March 16, 2020.

To learn more about today's announcements, please visit https://www.alberta.ca/coronavirus-info-for-albertans.aspx#p22780s3.

Update: March 13 / 10 a.m.

It is important to note there have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the south zone at this time. While there are people following provincial recommendations to self-isolate if they are feeling unwell, MHC has not received any confirmation of cases from Alberta Health Services.

While several universities have sought and received government permission to temporarily close today, the provincial directive to all other institutions, including MHC, is to remain open at this time.

Classes and operations will continue as scheduled today, however, Medicine Hat College is implementing several initiatives that will impact access and select services:

  • Effective today, 24-hour access to the Medicine Hat campus will change to allow for additional cleaning services. The campus will be closed from 11 p.m. – 7 a.m., except for security and cleaning staff.
  • The Fitness Centre at the Medicine Hat and Brooks campuses will close to public use until further notice. Any courses that occur in these facilities will continue as scheduled.
  • Group fitness classes at the Medicine Hat and Brooks campuses (noon hour/after work) are cancelled until further notice.
  • Event cancellations at MHC are occurring. To date, the Healing and Reconciliation Conference (March 23 - 27) and the Regional Science Fair (March 21) have been cancelled. Additional event cancellation information will be shared on our website as details are confirmed.
