Trick or Eat event at MHC collects donations for local food bank

October 22, 2013

The Medicine Hat College (MHC) Student Residence and Department of International Education have teamed up to organize a Trick or Eat Meal Exchange Campaign on Thursday, October 31 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The event takes a different approach to the traditional Halloween celebrations, and instead of asking for candy, teams raise money online and go door-to-door collecting non-perishable food items.

All donations will be given to the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank.

“Last year we gathered 3,035.4 pounds (lbs) of food and the donations filled a whole truck,” said Glenda Staples, residence manager. “This year we are hoping to raise at least 3,500 lbs. and hope that the Food Bank has so many donations they have to make two trips.”

Staples explained that the campaign is a way to help solve the problem that 1.6 million Canadian households have with food insecurity.  This also means that 3.9 individuals, including 1.1 million children do not have access to adequate, nutritious and affordable food.

“It is about having fun, connecting with friends and making a difference. We encourage those attending to dress-up if they wish,” said Staples. “The MHC team is also accepting cash donations online from anyone who would like to support this cause.”

Donations from the public will be accepted until the day of the event at the office located in the Golfview Residence. Hours of operation are:  Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed from 12 to 1 p.m. daily, for lunch. Those interested in giving a cash donation are encouraged to visit the team website at www.mhc.ab.ca/trickoreat. The fundraising goal this year is $8,000.
