Beth Lewis walked away with $500 and a big boost for her small business on Thursday following Medicine Hat College's (MHC) first ever Start Up Company Pub Pitch Night. Pub Pitch Nights, which will run monthly until April, provide anyone who has a dream and the drive to make it happen with an opportunity to present their business concept to a panel of local professionals.
While presenting in front of a class is nothing new for this fourth year Bachelor of Business Administration student, pitching to a panel of judges for money is a different experience entirely. For Lewis, the benefits of being involved with the event extend well beyond the prize money.
“Having the first one [pitch] under my belt has increased my confidence. It’s given me ideas on how to refine my pitch and make it the best it can be,” says Lewis, who hopes to her expand existing jewelry business, Rustic Rose, to hand-pressed, western apparel.
Prior to the pitches, Craig Elias, best-selling author, award winning entrepreneur in a global pitch competition and founder of 150 Startups, shared his presentation on the top 10 critical steps needed to turn an idea into a business.
“Craig’s talk really inspired me and gave me some great ideas. He also validated some of what I have been doing and offered to help train me for future pitches which is amazing,” says Lewis. She plans to participate in future Pub Pitch Nights with the ultimate goal of competing in the Start Up Company Pitch Competition in April.
Three other aspiring entrepreneurs also pitched their plans for new businesses. Roxanne Doerksen won the People’s Choice Award and $410 for her pitch to build a commercial worm farm. Ian Bishop shared his vision for a residential solar installation business, while Alan Haggerty pitched high performance, high speed go cart experiences.

Christie Dick, entrepreneur advisor for MHC’s Entrepreneur Development Centre, couldn’t be more pleased with the success of the inaugural pitch night.
“We had a full house and were so excited to see such support for the event. This is exactly what we were hoping to achieve – showcasing the great ideas of these passionate dreamers and giving them the chance to gather feedback from local business leaders in a relaxed atmosphere.”
