About the Ceremony

When and where does convocation take place?
Friday, June 12, 2020 at 1:30 p.m.

How long is the ceremony?
The ceremony will last approximately 2 hours. You and your guests are requested to remain in the arena for the duration of the ceremony.

When should I arrive and where do I go?
All students participating in the ceremony will congregate at the southeast end of the arena, behind the stage curtain. Students should arrive in their convocation gowns no later than 12:45 p.m. and are asked to leave all personal items with friends or family.

Medicine Hat College staff will be on hand to assist with your convocation gown and stole and provide you with the required material you need to cross the stage. The material will be labelled with your program and name. It is important that you keep this material with you and leave it intact until you cross the stage during the ceremony. Medicine Hat College staff line you up in alphabetical order (by last name) in your program. It is important that you maintain that order for the duration of the ceremony.


Gowns / PTK

Where do I pick up my cap and gown?
Convocation gowns will be available for pick up on Thursday, June 11 from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Friday, June 12 from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in the shipping/receiving entrance at the southeast end of the Canalta Centre. You will be required to show photo ID to pick up your gown.

Gowns must be returned to the bins that will be set up at the Canalta Centre by 5 p.m. on June 12. Should a gown fail to be returned a hold will be placed on that students account until the gown is returned or paid for. Students can keep the cap and tassel as souvenirs.

What about Phi Theta Kappa cords?
PTK members will receive gold cords with their convocation gowns; the cords can be kept as a souvenir.

What should I wear?
The convocation gowns are warm, so consider the weather and wear appropriate clothing the day of your ceremony. The gowns typically reach below your knees so business dress and comfortable shoes are suggested.


Guests and parking

How many guests may students invite?
We do not have a limit for the number of people you may invite and there are no tickets required for the event. Doors will open for guests at 12:30 p.m.

Where can my guests and I park?
You and your guests may park free of charge in any of the parking lots at the Canalta Centre.


After the ceremony

To celebrate your accomplishments, you and your guests are invited for complimentary refreshments at the Alumni Tea immediately following your ceremony. Please plan to attend and enjoy the celebration with your fellow students, instructors, and college staff but don't forget to return your gown to the area that you originally congregated!

What about graduation photos?
Lifetouch Photography will be providing graduation and family photographs at the Canalta Centre from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on June 12. Photos are printed on site and are ready in 30 minutes. Prices start at $25. 


Other Information

Notice of Financial Hold
If you have applied to graduate and have not cleared outstanding accounts (tuition, library, residence, etc.), you will not be allowed to participate in convocation ceremonies and you will not receive graduation documents.

What happens after I submit my Application to Graduate?
Questions regarding requirements for graduation status can be found in the college calendar applicable to your program. Specific questions can be directed to Shelley at 403.504.3603.

When will students receive information on the Ceremony?
Students will receive detailed information through their Medicine Hat College email in mid-May. Information will continue to be available on this website as well.

I indicated that I would attend the ceremony but I am no longer able to do so. Who should I contact?

I’m not attending convocation. How do I receive my parchment?
If you will not be attending convocation, your parchment will be mailed out to you the first business day after the ceremony. The parchment will be mailed to the permanent address we have on file for you, so please ensure you update your record.
