Medicine Hat College is seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic faculty member to instruct lab courses for the unique Service Dog and Canine Studies Management Diploma Program for the School of Business and Continuing Studies.
A little about the role:
The position will include instructing courses in an on-site, custom-built dog training facility on the Medicine Hat campus. Responsibilities may include teaching lectures and hands-on instructions of lab-based classes where students gain practical experience training the program’s service dogs in training. A successful candidate will need to be well-versed in modern evidence-based training methods, have experience in the field and hold current professional certifications or designations. The focus is providing a quality learning experience to students in this “first of its kind in Canada” program. Part-time faculty member activities are focused on quality instruction in support of quality programming in a collaborative environment that contributes to the mission of the College and focus on the success of our students.

Details:
- Degree in a training or animal-related program (e.g., adult education, behavioural science, animal behaviour, biology, psychology, etc.) would be an asset; however, a combination of relevant organizational experience and education will be considered.
- Certificate in dog training through independent certification programs, such as CPDT-KA, KPA-CTP, IAABC, or other recognized certifications.
- Minimum of two years of experience in canine training, including professional experience related to Service Dogs, dog behaviour training and modification, and leading public dog training classes.
- Public speaking skills and demonstrated training expertise using LIMA and Positive Reinforcement techniques, including clicker/marker training.
- Proficiency in using PCs, the Internet, and MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, with the ability to learn new software.
- Self-starter capable of working independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaborating effectively as part of a team.
- Proven record of working collaboratively.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- A passion and commitment to learners and learning.
- An open and inquisitive mindset.
- Experience instructing in the post-secondary sector is an asset.
