The Medicine Hat College Student of the Year is nominated by the faculty and awarded annually to a student with exceptional academic standing. Additionally, this student must have made a significant contribution to the cultural, social or recreational life of Medicine Hat College. This year we are pleased to honour Sheryl Dowler, a graduate of the practical nurse program.
Sheryl always wanted to attend college but as the mother of five, the timing never seemed right for her. After watching three of her children attend MHC, and her own mother return to the classroom later in life, Sheryl was inspired to do the same.
She decided to pursue a career in nursing but, during her first year, her mom was diagnosed with cancer. Sheryl was able to alter her schedule so she could support her mother through this difficult time. Although it delayed her progress in the program, it’s a decision she’s never regretted.
Then, in her final year, Sheryl was also diagnosed with cancer.
She thought she would have to give up her dreams, but with the support and encouragement of all the staff and faculty at Medicine Hat College - Brooks Campus she was able to continue with her classes through surgery and chemotherapy.
Happy to be able to focus on her studies and surround herself with her “adopted family” of classmates, staff and faculty, Sheryl was able to achieve her goal. Without their support, says Sheryl, she would not be where she is today.
Congratulations Sheryl on being named Medicine Hat College’s Student of the Year!
