Flash, Bang, Boom!

Join us for an explosive chemistry demonstration!

May 9, 2011

Renowned chemistry professor Dr. Lucio Gelmini is bringing his traveling chemistry road show to Medicine Hat on May 9, promising Hatters of all ages a new look at the world of science.

The presentation, titled "Flash, Bang, Boom," starts at 7 p.m. in the Medicine Hat College Theatre. Admission is free.

Gelmini is an instructor and past chair of chemistry at Grant MacEwan University, and chair of the Edmonton Science Outreach Network. His presentation is part of the International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011), a worldwide celebration of chemistry that is intended to reach across the globe and encourage public participation on all levels.

"This is an event that the whole community will enjoy," said Karly Burr, regional executive director of

Praxis. "We’ll learn about how things such as explosions happen, in a way even a non-chemist can understand. We hope to see a wide range of age groups in the audience to share this amazing experience."

Gelmini is also taking his show to both Medicine Hat High School and Crescent Heights High School on May 9 to further spread his love for chemistry and its intrigue.

"His school visits are a great opportunity for students to see firsthand how chemistry affects their everyday life," said Burr.

The "Flash, Bang, Boom" presentation is a joint presentation of Praxis, Medicine Hat College and Alberta Science Literacy Association.
