MHC announces new dean of science and health

Medicine Hat College (MHC) has appointed Dr. Mike Gillespie as the dean of the Division of Science and Health, effective July 14, 2014.
Dr. Gillespie comes to MHC from the State University of New York - Empire State College where he served as an associate dean. He has held professorships as well as administrative positions for a number of institutions around the globe including the United Kingdom, United States and Morocco.
“Medicine Hat College is currently in an exciting transition phase, including a leadership change; and we feel that Dr. Gillespie will fit well and be able to add his expertise,” said Dr. Vandervaart. “He has a depth of knowledge as well as experience in his discipline and proven success in leadership as well as strategic planning. We look forward to his future employment.”
He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Adapted Physical Activity) from The Ohio State University; a Master of Business Administration (Higher Education Management) from the Institute of Education, University of London, a Master of Science (Adapted Physical Activity) from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and a Bachelor of Human Kinetics from the University of Windsor.
“Dr. Gillespie has a reputation of working collaboratively with faculty, staff and colleagues to achieve the best results in the workplace. He has an extensive research background as well as interesting professional history outside of academe,” said Dr. Vandervaart. For example his appointments have included being chairperson of British Curling Ltd.; sport representative for the British National Paralympic Committee; director of the Northamptonshire Sport Executive Board; director of Special Olympics Saskatchewan; and an external research associate for the Regina Health District.
