Easter Break Camps teach children the fundamentals of PLAY

April 14, 2014

Medicine Hat College (MHC) Sport and Wellness is getting ready to run their annual Easter Break Camp from April 21 – 25, 2014. The Physical Literacy and You (PLAY) program is designed for children ages five to ten and is based on a national initiative to promote physical literacy in children and youth.

“These camps teach children fundamental movement skills which will enhance the child’s overall physical literacy,” said Sonya Brown, recreation and fitness programmer. “The program helps them build confidence, competence and immerses them in a team environment.”

The program provides two options PLAY Fun for ages 5-7 and PLAY Sport for ages 8-10.

PLAY Fun concentrates on developing agility, balance, coordination and speed – the ABCs by presenting it in a creative way through arts, crafts as well as fun indoor and outdoor activities. Play Sport places an emphasis on the development of sport specific skills through a variety of athletics including basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, etc.

There are a variety of times to choose from including morning, afternoon or full day.

“Parents can also sign up their children for pre or post care, which is an opportunity for campers to engage in supervised, low key, unorganized games,” said Brown.

Registration will remain open until Friday, April 18 and can be done by calling 403.529.3844.
