MHC receives $2 million to support practical nurse program

April 14, 2023

With a focus on health care training that addresses Southeast Alberta’s labour market needs, the provincial government has announced an investment of $2.105 million in Medicine Hat College (MHC).

The funding is part of the province’s targeted enrolment expansion initiative for postsecondary institutions and will support growth of MHC’s popular practical nurse program.

Dr. Nancy Brown, MHC’s vice-president academic and provost, says the funding makes it possible to respond to high demand for the PN program, which is offered at the college’s Brooks campus. The program attracts students from all over the region and this additional investment will allow the college to add an additional cohort of 32 students.

“This funding represents a strong investment in health care professionals in southern Alberta. It also supports MHC’s commitment to growing a vibrant future for learners and our region by providing relevant learning opportunities close to home,” says Brown.

The funding is for 32 additional seats annually for the next three years. The first new cohort will begin in Winter 2024.
