Began teaching at MHC: 2013
Amanda started her Electrical Apprenticeship at the age of 16, through her high school's RAP program. Her love of the Trades, paired with her passion for education, brought her to MHC in 2013 as an Electrical Instructor. One of her favorite aspects of instructing at MHC is the small class sizes, which allow her to better connect with students, tailor instruction, and offer additional help when needed. She loves being a part of the student-centered, hard-working team of Instructors in the School of Trades and Technologies. Amanda strives to promote the value of diversity, equity, interpersonal skills, and respect within the Skilled Trades. She is also a strong advocate of Trades programs for kids and under-represented groups.
In the classroom, Amanda strives to create a learning environment filled with genuine enthusiasm, curiosity, discussion, humor, and group contribution. Where it’s reiterated that no one can know everything, we can all teach each other something, and mistakes are a valuable part of learning.
Aside from telling jokes that are guaranteed to make at least one person laugh (yes, that one person would be her), she is also known to spontaneously jump into “craft mode” to create a visual/learning aid to help get that one theory topic to finally “click” for a student. She sincerely thinks math can be fun and does indeed have favorite parts of the Canadian Electrical Code.
