Dean Young has an open and real-world focused teaching philosophy and is passionate about life skills that are transferable to a career in criminal justice. Students will be able to participate in candid and boundary expanding discussion in class. Students will gain valuable insight into the impact of individual experiences as they pertain to the course content and will have a safe and respectful space to share their own.
Dean's professional history is diverse within the public safety industry, his interest lies in communication and leadership development as keys to success. Further, Dean is an active advocate for alternative service delivery in the public safety industry and is an ardent champion for first responder mental health. Contemporary public safety in Canada provides a broad diverse occupational field, with so many choices for graduates to pursue viable careers, and it is Dean's drive to equip students to be resilient, strong leaders in their chosen fields.
Dean started his career in the private sector as a security guard. He grew his skill set by joining his local fire department, serving as a Safety Officer and Emergency Medical Responder. After time spent advancing in the security management industry, he began his educator career, having taught in justice programs for 2 colleges in Alberta. Feeling disconnected from his service roots, he returned to the field, and served 13 years as a Community Peace Officer. Upon transitioning from active law enforcement, he assisted a First Nation community manage their Public Safety and Justice department. Dean has volunteered significantly with numerous community service groups, including endeavors in crisis management, addiction awareness, and youth justice/ restorative justice. From this experience, Dean brings a broad and candid perspective of relevant real world understanding to the classroom, along with valuable life lessons and professional experiences that have led to a satisfying and successful community-centric career. The lessons that draw from these experiences will be the backdrop to many of the skills and knowledge covered in the Criminal Justice program.
