Jodi Clark-Miller has been employed with the Medicine Hat College since 2007. Her current teaching appointment is a cross-section between the School of Health and Community Services and the School of Arts, Science, and Education. She teaches a diverse range of courses, including introductory sociology, and several counselling courses including mental health and family support. She is also a faculty field supervisor overseeing student placements in the community.
Her education includes Practical Nursing, a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care Counselling, and a Master's in Social Work. Jodi is inspired by those who work tirelessly to navigate unjust systems/processes while they hold steady an unwavering belief in a better world. Her primary area of passion and research is mental health, specifically trauma informed care.
As a teacher, she does not consider herself an expert in fostering student learning. Instead, she aspires to develop an “expertise" in facilitating a dialogue and collaborative process. In this way, both the student and Jodi have the potential to undergo a transformative shaping and reshaping process while working together. In addition, Jodi aspires to be strength-based. She believes that people already have the competencies necessary for successful coping and growth within post-secondary education, but may not use them, underuse them, or they may not recognize this within themselves. Jodi believes through highly relational practice, students can and will exercise more power over their lives and thus increase their sense of personal agency when they, too, identify with their point of strength/power.
Jodi has two sons; they embody a laughing personality and a dancing spirit. They are her anchor and compass in all that she does. Jodi is an animal lover; the caregiver of two cats and a Labrador Retriever. Her dog keeps her young and active. She keeps grounded with movies, theatre, reading, lane swimming, walking, and her favourite, breathing in a sunrise while in nature with a hot cup of coffee.
