Pride Week activities colour MHC

September 12, 2022

Celebrations will colour the campus at Medicine Hat College (MHC) on September 12-15 in honour of Pride Week, promoting an environment of inclusivity, equality and learning in support for the LGBTQ2S+ community.

Alysha Kuntz, president of the Students’ Association at MHC (SAMHC), says there are a variety of activities planned for everyone on campus to take part in, beginning with the raising of the Pride flag on Sept. 12.

“We at the SA strive to be a safe space for members of the LGBTQ2S+ community,” says Kuntz, who encourages all students, faculty and staff to join in the activities by entering the office decorating contest and participating in the “Show Your Pride” photo booth. Kuntz adds that students can post all of their Pride photos from the week on Facebook & Instagram and tag SAMHC to ‘flood social media with Pride’.

To ensure that MHC is continuing to educate those on campus about the importance of Pride Week, there will be an information & resource fair on Sept. 14, followed by an opportunity for students to connect with each other and learn about allyship during the campus ‘Communitea’ on Sept. 15.

MHC’s Brooks campus also plans to host a number of events to celebrate Pride Week, beginning on Sept. 13. Events will include hand printed canvas painting, information sharing on how to be an ally to the LGBTQ2S+ community, along with games and fun throughout the week.

Beyond Pride Week, leaders of SAMHC strive to continue to promote diversity, and inclusion on campus.

“We are delighted we now get to display a new Progressive Pride flag at our office throughout the year. This new flag helps give visual representation of our endeavor to grow as leaders of allyship and equality.”
