A local collaboration that showcases the artistic talents of local high school students returns to Medicine Hat College (MHC) from Feb. 11-27, with the annual High School Art Show.

Jessica Plattner, program coordinator and instructor for MHC’s art and design program, says the high school show is an exciting opportunity for community to see the work being accomplished in classrooms, while offering art and design students an opportunity to see what younger artists are working on.

“It's exciting to see what current high school students are doing and it can be helpful for our current students who sometimes get inspired by work that they see in the high school show,” says Plattner.

She adds that there is a benefit for high school students to view their work in a professional context.

“Seeing your work on a clean white wall helps you see it more objectively. When you're working, you're up close to the work, and you get lost in these trains of thought. Just stepping back makes a big difference, you see it differently.”

The exhibition will highlight works chosen by teachers at Crescent Heights, Eagle Butte, Medicine Hat, and Monsignor McCoy High Schools, showcasing each student’s unique artistic style. From fine arts, including still-life drawings and painting techniques to digital arts like photography, videography, and animation, the show promises to present a broad range of technique.

“The teachers are really thoughtful about what they're doing with their students,” says Plattner, who adds that some are MHC alumni themselves. “They’re dealing with elements and principles of art and design and really trying to teach kids the tools of seeing and representing the world.”
Plattner adds, collaborating with the local high schools provides an idea of what mediums students have already explored prior to joining our program.

“I love getting to know the high school teachers better and learning about what they do in their classrooms because a lot of our students come from these high schools, so it gives us a good understanding of their background.”

She looks forward to celebrating with the teachers and students at the High School Show reception on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. Student awards will be announced at the event and there will be opportunities for prospective art and design students to get to know the faculty at MHC. Current students are also hosting a bake sale and offering tours of our facility throughout the event.
