Alberta RPAS Strategy
Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), or drones, are a transformative technology with many positive ramifications for Alberta. RPAS have the potential to accelerate Alberta’s economic performance and improve the quality of life for all Albertans.
Over the course of the first year, our project established relationships with all Post-secondary institutes (PSI) conducting research or training with drones throughout the province. Through this collaboration, we gained valuable insights into the programs offered by each institute. At the same time, conversations with industry occurred, detailing the current and future workforce needs. This information was collated into a report that is accessible here.
As we move into the second year of the project, our focus shifts towards knowledge mobilization and communicating our findings. We aim to dispel myths and address concerns both from industry stakeholders and the general public. Our objective is to engage in meaningful conversations across the province, highlighting the economic, financial, and safety implications of embracing RPAS opportunities. It's important to note that RPAS is not a technology designed to replace the workforce, but rather a valuable tool that enhances efficiency, accuracy of data collection, and safety while reducing costs, emissions, and downtime. We are committed to showcasing the positive impact of RPAS technology adoption throughout Alberta.
“Alberta's history in RPAS development, extensive resources, and emphasis on innovation and collaboration combine to create an ideal environment to propel the RPAS industry forward.”
-Jeremy Patton, RPAS Project Officer
