Wind Turbines

Local governments, farmers, businesses, and emergency services in the Southeast Alberta region have raised concerns about the implications of wind park installations on aircraft and aerial systems. To address these concerns, the Centre for Innovation (C4i) conducted a project focused on examining the potential impact of wind turbines on agricultural operations and aviation in the region. A literature review was carried out by a research assistant as part of the C4i team. The outcome of the review led to the identification of three key themes and the creation of a series of articles that explored the intersection of wind turbines and aviation:
• Wind Turbine Wakes and Light Aircraft
• Wind Turbines and Air Ambulances
• Wind Turbines and Agricultural Aerial Applications 

Project Overview

The literature review project sought to provide evidence-based recommendations, particularly on setback distances and mitigation strategies, based on the findings. The resulting articles serve multiple purposes. First, they help identify existing strategies for mitigating the impact of wind parks on aviation. This information is valuable in developing best practices and guidelines for wind farm developers, farmers, businesses, and emergency services, minimizing any negative consequences. Second, it addresses the concerns of stakeholders, ensuring they have access to accurate, objective information about the potential impacts and mitigation strategies. Finally, the project provides valuable insights to policymakers and regulatory agencies responsible for wind energy development and aviation industry regulation.

Impact

The impact of this project is significant, as it facilitates informed decision-making and cooperation between diverse stakeholders, mitigating concerns related to wind park installations. It offers solutions to address potential conflicts and encourages responsible development, promoting sustainable coexistence between wind energy and aviation activities in Southeast Alberta.

Partner

The County of Forty Mile No. 8, located in Southeast Alberta, faced challenges in assessing wind turbine projects in the area. In response, they sought assistance from the Centre for Innovation (C4i). In line with their commitment to continually support local government initiatives, C4i secured funding through the support of CICan's Career-Launcher Impact Internship Program. This funding facilitated the hiring of a research assistant who became part of the C4i team during the summer of 2023. This collaboration played a crucial role in conducting a literature review, contributing to a more informed and cooperative approach in the region.
