Shauna Kohls-Walters, Piano Instructor
Shauna Kohls-Walters has been an instructor at the Medicine Hat College Conservatory of Music and Dance since 1997. She holds her Bachelor of Music with distinction from the University of Victoria where she studied with Dr. Robin Wood, a Master of Music from the University of British Columbia where she studied solo repertoire with Robert Rogers, chamber music with Dr. Jane Coop, and accompanying with Rena Sharon. She also attended summer masterclasses at the Banff Centre of the Arts and has her A.R.C.T. in piano performance.Shauna loves the piano and it brings her great joy to share this with her students. She teaches a wide range of students, many of whom have won awards and competitions at provincial, regional and local levels. Shauna also enjoys teaching students who are interested in learning to play the piano, but not necessarily wanting to perform or take exams. These include retirees looking for a new challenge, singers wanting to improve their piano skills, students with learning challenges, and those who simply like music and want to learn basic skills.
Lessons are tailored to meet the particular needs of each student. All aspects of piano playing are addressed: technical, musical, reading, listening and theory. Shauna emphasizes overcoming the technical challenges of the instrument by focusing on the musical interpretation of the repertoire. She also is very active as a collaborative musician, accompanying numerous singers as well as string and wind players over the years. She has also performed as accompanist for the Southern Alberta Voice Experience in Lethbridge and enjoys her work as rehearsal pianist for CHHS musicals.
Shauna truly loves teaching piano, accompanying, and working with all of her students. It gives her great satisfaction to share her passion for music and piano playing with others.
