Ian Richmond’s education started right here at Medicine Hat College; he was part of the very first Bachelor of Applied Visual Communications degree class in 2003. He later graduated with a Master of Arts with Distinction in Graphic Communication from the UK’s University of Hertfordshire in 2016.
Ian's design practice harnesses principles related to polysemy, semiotics, pictograms and typography to produce solutions for better-informed design and communication, thereby fostering comprehension amongst culturally diverse participants. He is a proponent of using the vernacular (locally specific ideas, artefacts, culture) to utilize what is available in one’s environment to solve problems locally. Using what we have around us promotes sustainable thinking and living, empowering us to take an active approach to improving our lives through communication and design.
