Student design showcase explores culture and creativity
Medicine Hat College’s One on One Gallery will feature a new exhibition, Mosaic, highlighting the work of second-year Art & Design students. Running from January 8 to 29, 2025, the show is based on a graphic design assignment that explores cultural identity and diversity through creative 3D packaging designs.
The exhibition showcases a fall semester project led by graphic design instructor, Yulin Wang, where students responded to the question: “Is it a Mosaic or a Melting Pot?” The designs offer unique perspectives on multiculturalism, creativity, and unity.
“Not only will the students demonstrate their different approaches, but their designs provide a greater platform to address and celebrate multiculturalism and richness of our world,” explains Wang. “I strongly believe by embracing togetherness we can celebrate the richness in creativity, cultural diversity and broaden our viewpoint in our life.”
Jessica Plattner, program coordinator and art and design instructor, notes the exhibition’s unique focus on graphic design.
“While many of our gallery exhibitions focus more on fine arts, like painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, this exhibition gives viewers a chance to see what second-year students are learning about graphic design.”
The gallery opens on Jan. 8. Community members are invited to view the work during gallery hours or at a public reception on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
