BAHSc Paramedic Post-Diploma
The Bachelor of Applied Health Science Paramedic degree entry is open to Practicing Paramedics (ACP) with pre-existing credentials and exists to meet the emerging needs of patients, practitioners, and employers. As a result of practitioner and industry demand, the Bachelor of Applied Health Science (Paramedic) degree option is open to all graduate Advanced Care Paramedics via a distance learning format/program.
The applied degree combines theoretical approaches to learning with elements of practical application to the Paramedic field. This program is available solely as a Distance Learning program. Please note that an applied degree is not equivalent to a four-year Bachelor of Science program.

Additional Information
There are currently two intakes for distributed learning (DL) courses, September and January.
- Each PARA course requires between 6 and 14 hours per week, so it is not recommended you take more than two courses at a time.
- Courses must be completed within five (5) years of initial entry.
- Typically if taking two courses every four months, it would take 3 years to complete the program.
Estimated costs for the school year include costs associated with taking the non-PARA courses on-site at Medicine Hat College. If these courses are taken at a different institution, please be aware you will incur additional costs for admission and course fees payable to that institution.
Tuition is based on the credit units per class. Fees are payable in full on the tuition due date as published on the MHC Academic Schedule available on the MHC website.
International fees can be found here.
The PARA courses are set up to be completed like an in-class course with specific due dates; they are not self-paced. There are, typically, term papers and weekly unit assignments that are essentially questions to be answered and then submitted to the instructor. This is all completed online through Blackboard.
PARA 470 and PARA 480 are Work Terms. These are either based on research or a project, not clinicals or practicums. The work terms are designed to be completed within a 4 month time frame, however it will depend on your research or project. You may elect to complete these terms in partnership with an employer, however is not mandatory. If so, you and your employer will decide together on the research or project that will educationally or operationally benefit the employer as well as the community. For example, a student could research and implement the benefits of wearing helmets, or improvements on response times, etc. Often Para 470 is the precursor to the final term; as such it may be your intended proposal but must be discussed and arranged with the lead instructor. Each work term is meant to be separate, but may work in conjunction with one another as often students develop a proposal in PARA 470 and complete the research and or project in PARA 480.
The following is the recommended course sequencing for the BAHSc. Applied Degree:
- PARA 452 EMS and the Canadian Health System
- PHIL 313 Bioethics
- PARA 453 Community Focused Theory
- MGMT 243 Human Resources Management
- PARA 454 Leadership in Health Care
- STAT 333 Statistics for the Life Sciences
- PARA 455 Research
- PARA 470 Work Term I
- PARA 480 Work Term II
Please note that PHIL 313 will need to be completed either on-site or through another institution, such as Athabasca University (PHIL 335), that offers equivalent courses. Medicine Hat College does not, at present, offer this course through distributed learning. Athabasca University requires students to register by the 10th day of the month prior to the desired start date.
Please be aware that tuition and other fees associated with the class and admission fees are payable to the other institution and are the student’s responsibility.
A Letter of Permission must be submitted prior to taking this course. Tracey Semko, Academic Advisor, is available to assist you through this process.
